Under QAR 20,000 in Qatar, paying more barely buys fewer kilometres. The mileage cliff is at QAR 20,000 itself.

There are 1,216 used cars listed under QAR 20,000 today, and 593 under QAR 13,500 — the figure the guides call the start of the market. Between QAR 5,000 and QAR 20,000 the middle car's odometer falls only from 238,000 km to 203,000. Cross QAR 20,000 and it drops to 168,000 in a single step.

Qatar Living's September guide to used car prices tells a reader that “entry-level used cars start at roughly QAR 13,500” and that “a reliable used car sits somewhere between QAR 25,000 and QAR 90,000”. On BuMotar today there are 13,564 live cars with an asking price. 1,216 of them are under QAR 20,000 and 593 are under QAR 13,500. The cheap end of this market is not a rounding error; it is one car in eleven.

So the question is not whether it exists. It is what you are actually buying as you move up through it — and the answer surprised us.

How we measured it

Every figure below comes from live listings on BuMotar on 1 November 2026. For anything involving mileage we kept only cars that state one between 1,000 and 500,000 km, because an odometer of 0 or 1,200,000 is a typing error, not a car.

That exclusion is larger here than anywhere else on the site, and it is itself a finding: of the 1,216 cars under QAR 20,000, 438 — 36% — do not state a mileage at all. 617 have a photograph. 314 carry a description of 200 characters or more. At the end of the market where the car's history matters most, the listing tells you least.

The ladder

The middle car at each price step, by model year and by odometer. Read the mileage column downwards:

  • QAR 5,000 to 7,499 — 26 cars. Median year 2010, median 238,000 km.
  • QAR 7,500 to 9,999 — 77 cars. 2011, 253,500 km.
  • QAR 10,000 to 12,499 — 130 cars. 2012, 207,700 km.
  • QAR 12,500 to 14,999 — 129 cars. 2012, 220,000 km.
  • QAR 15,000 to 17,499 — 199 cars. 2013, 207,000 km.
  • QAR 17,500 to 19,999 — 201 cars. 2014, 203,000 km.
  • QAR 20,000 to 22,499 — 222 cars. 2014, 167,800 km.
  • QAR 22,500 to 24,999 — 208 cars. 2015, 152,000 km.
  • QAR 25,000 to 27,499 — 254 cars. 2015, 160,000 km.
  • QAR 27,500 to 29,999 — 359 cars. 2015, 146,000 km.

Quadrupling the budget from QAR 5,000 to just under QAR 20,000 takes about 35,000 km off the middle car. The next QAR 2,500 takes off 35,000 more. Below QAR 20,000 the money is buying model years — 2010 to 2014, four of them — and almost nothing else.

From QAR 5,000 to QAR 20,000, four times the money, the middle car's odometer falls by about 35,000 km. The next QAR 2,500 takes off 35,000 more.

Why the odometer stops mattering

Across the whole market, price and mileage move together as you would expect: the correlation between them is -0.39 over 11,453 cars. Inside the under-QAR-20,000 band it is -0.12, and between QAR 20,000 and 60,000 it is -0.09.

Part of that is arithmetic rather than economics — narrow the range of any variable and its correlation with anything weakens — so we would not rest the argument on it. The ladder above does not have that problem, and it says the same thing. What sets the price at this end is the model year and the badge on the back, and the odometer is close to noise.

That is not irrational. A 2008 car with 190,000 km and the same car with 310,000 km are both, to most buyers here, simply an old car; the difference in what is left of it is real but nobody can see it from a listing, so nobody pays for it.

The famous names cost you kilometres

The models with the most cars under QAR 20,000, with the middle car of each:

  • Nissan Sunny — 113 cars. QAR 11,000, 2013, 214,000 km.
  • Nissan Tiida — 62 cars. QAR 8,600, 2010, 263,000 km.
  • Toyota Corolla — 47 cars. QAR 13,200, 2008, 325,500 km.
  • Honda City — 42 cars. QAR 13,500, 2014, 278,000 km.
  • Mitsubishi Lancer — 41 cars. QAR 9,500, 2013, 230,000 km.
  • Nissan Altima — 41 cars. QAR 12,000, 2012, 224,000 km.
  • Toyota Camry — 36 cars. QAR 13,250, 2010, 313,000 km.
  • Nissan Pathfinder — 36 cars. QAR 15,000, 2008, 231,000 km.
  • Honda Civic — 34 cars. QAR 10,550, 2008, 193,000 km.
  • Kia Rio — 29 cars. QAR 14,500, 2016, 284,000 km.
  • Mitsubishi Pajero — 28 cars. QAR 16,000, 2008, 292,700 km.
  • Renault Duster — 25 cars. QAR 11,000, 2016, 171,000 km.

The two names a buyer here reaches for first, Corolla and Camry, are the two with the highest mileage on the list: a median of 325,500 km and 313,000 km. That is the badge working exactly as advertised — these are the cars people keep running rather than scrap — and it is also the reason the cheap ones are so tired. You are paying the Toyota premium for a car that has already spent it.

What QAR 20,000 can actually buy

Sort the same band by odometer instead of by popularity and a different list appears. Models with at least six cars under QAR 20,000, lowest median mileage first:

  • Ford Figo — 13 cars. QAR 17,500, 2020, 77,000 km.
  • Chevrolet Aveo — 6 cars. QAR 17,000, 2019, 119,500 km.
  • Chevrolet Cruze — 13 cars. QAR 10,500, 2015, 134,000 km.
  • Ford EcoSport — 8 cars. QAR 15,000, 2015, 135,500 km.
  • Kia Pegas — 6 cars. QAR 19,250, 2022, 155,000 km.
  • Nissan Juke — 8 cars. QAR 15,750, 2012, 161,000 km.
  • Renault Duster — 25 cars. QAR 11,000, 2016, 171,000 km.

Put the two lists side by side. A 2009 Corolla is listed today at QAR 13,500 with 329,000 km. A 2021 Ford Figo is listed at QAR 14,500 with 83,000 km. QAR 1,000 apart, twelve model years and a quarter of a million kilometres apart. Both are real listings on the site as this is published.

What these cheaper-per-kilometre cars have in common is that nobody in Qatar asks for them by name. The discount on an unwanted badge is what pays for the low odometer. The catch is the same fact read the other way: when you come to sell, the thin demand that made it cheap is still thin. If you are keeping the car until it dies, that costs you nothing. If you expect to sell in two years, it is the whole trade.

116 of the 1,216 cars under QAR 20,000 are from model year 2018 or later, so a young cheap car is not a fantasy — it is about one in ten of the band, and it is mostly these models.

What to do with this

  • If you are buying under QAR 20,000 — Do not shop by price step. Within this band a higher price does not mean a better car, so set the budget once and then sort by mileage and by year. Treat the 36% with no mileage stated as unpriced until you have asked; a seller who leaves it out has usually not left it out by accident. And if you can stretch past QAR 20,000, that single step is worth about 35,000 km — more than the previous QAR 15,000 of budget bought you.
  • If you are buying a Corolla or a Camry at this price — Check the odometer before anything else, and expect it to be above 300,000 km. These are good cars that have already done the work. Budget for what a car that age needs rather than for what the badge suggests.
  • If you are selling under QAR 20,000 — State the mileage, and put up a photograph. Two thirds of this band has no description and half has no picture, so a listing that answers the obvious questions stands out at no cost. If your car is genuinely low-mileage for the price, say the number in the first line — it is the one thing in this band that nobody else can claim.
  • If you are selling a low-demand model — Price it against the odometer, not the badge. A 2020 Figo at 77,000 km is competing with 2008 Corollas, and on everything except the name it wins.

What we do not know, and what would change the answer. These are asking prices, not sale prices; if cheap cars sell at a bigger discount to their asking price than expensive ones, the ladder is flatter than it looks, not steeper. Mileage is as the seller states it, and we cannot see a replaced cluster or a wound-back odometer — in a band where the odometer barely affects the price, the incentive to tamper is low, but it is not zero. 438 cars in the band state no mileage and are missing from every mileage figure here; if those cars are systematically worse than the ones that do state it, every median above is too kind. Several of the low-mileage models rest on six to thirteen cars, which is thin. And we have no service history, no accident history and no record of how long any of these cars has been for sale.
