QAR 130,000 buys a 2024 Fortuner with 18,000 km in Qatar, or a 2022 Prado with 74,000 km

On 2020 to 2023 cars of the same year and mileage, a used Prado asks about 31% more than a Fortuner. The Fortuner buys a younger car with less distance on it; what the extra money buys in the Prado is a separate question that asking prices cannot settle.

A family in Qatar that wants a Toyota SUV and does not want to pay Land Cruiser money usually ends up choosing between these two. Both are sold new by Toyota Qatar, which today starts the Fortuner at QAR 129,700 and the Prado at QAR 183,700. The used market is where most of that choice gets made, so here is what sellers are asking.

BuMotar had 13,685 live listings on 8 November 2026. Among them were 187 cars listed as Prado, 12 more filed under Land Cruiser with Prado as the trim, and 93 Fortuners. We kept model years 2014 to 2026, with 1,000 to 600,000 km and an asking price of at least QAR 15,000, and took out duplicates and manual gearboxes. That leaves 118 Prados and 69 Fortuners. Their middle cars are close in age and distance, a 2021 Prado at 85,035 km and a 2022 Fortuner at 81,000 km, and far apart in price: QAR 125,000 against QAR 90,999.

What the same money buys

Take a budget, allow a band around it, and look at the middle car of each model inside it. These are median model years and odometer readings:

  • QAR 72,000 to 88,000 — Fortuner: 2020, 130,000 km (16 cars). Prado: 2015, 182,000 km (16 cars).
  • QAR 90,000 to 110,000 — Fortuner: 2022, 54,500 km (22 cars). Prado: 2019, 140,000 km (19 cars).
  • QAR 117,000 to 143,000 — Fortuner: 2024, 18,000 km (11 cars). Prado: 2022, 74,000 km (37 cars).

In every band the Fortuner is two to five model years younger, with 52,000 to 85,500 km less on it. Below QAR 72,000 there are too few Fortuners to say anything: three between QAR 54,000 and QAR 66,000.

Around QAR 100,000 the choice is a 2022 Fortuner at 54,500 km or a 2019 Prado at 140,000 km.

The same year, the same mileage

Part of that gap is odometer, so we matched the cars by model year and 50,000 km band, kept groups with at least two of each model, and compared median asking prices. Not many groups survive, because neither car is listed in large numbers once you split it this finely.

  • 2020 to 2023 — The Prado asks about 31% more, on average about QAR 32,000. 27 Prados and 10 Fortuners in 3 groups.
  • 2024 to 2026 — The Prado asks about 47% more, on average about QAR 57,000. 10 Prados and 17 Fortuners in 2 groups.

Before 2020 only one group qualifies, which is not enough to report. The second row is also not like for like, for the reason below.

Engines do not close the gap

Both cars are sold with four and six cylinders, and on 2020 to 2023 cars the Fortuner's mix leans further to the smaller engine. So the 31% could be partly an engine premium. Among 2020 to 2023 cars where the listing records the cylinders, the medians look like this:

  • Four cylinders — Fortuner QAR 89,999 at 95,000 km (11 cars). Prado QAR 125,000 at 73,000 km (7 cars).
  • Six cylinders — Fortuner QAR 105,000 at 56,000 km (9 cars). Prado QAR 138,000 at 71,000 km (33 cars).

These are not mileage matched and the counts are small, but the direction holds in both rows. A four-cylinder Prado asks QAR 20,000 more than a six-cylinder Fortuner that has covered less distance.

The Prado changed; the price barely noticed

Toyota revealed the 250 Series, the Prado's replacement, in August 2023, and named a 2.4-litre turbo petrol engine for the Middle East. Absolute Geeks reported the same engine at the car's UAE launch in June 2024. Our listings show the switch: of 2023 Prados with cylinders recorded, 15 have six and 4 have four. Of 2024 Prados, 5 have four and 1 has six.

The asking price moved less than you might expect. A 2023 Prado has a median of QAR 139,000 at 57,500 km (20 cars) and a 2024 has QAR 149,000 at 51,000 km (7 cars). That is QAR 10,000 for a new generation, on a sample of seven.

Nearly new, against the showroom

A 2025 car at a median 18,000 km asks QAR 160,000 for the Prado (9 cars) and QAR 114,000 for the Fortuner (9 cars). Set against Toyota Qatar's current starting prices, that is QAR 23,700 under for the Prado (13%) and QAR 15,700 under for the Fortuner (12%). The starting price is for the cheapest version of today's car and we do not know the trims of these listings, so treat the comparison as rough.

Cars listed with under 1,000 km give a less tidy picture. Nine 2026 Prados have a median asking price of QAR 179,000, below Toyota's starting price. Five 2026 Fortuners sit above it, with medians of QAR 135,000 for the three V6 cars and QAR 136,500 for the two four-cylinder cars, and at that level the listings are probably for higher trims.

Distance and long-run value

Of the 2014 to 2021 cars, 32% of Prados (19 of 60) show 200,000 km or more, against 9% of Fortuners (3 of 32). The median Prado has covered about 17,700 km per year of age and the median Fortuner about 15,200, counting age as 2026 minus the model year. Part of that may be which cars get sold rather than how they are driven.

We would have liked to show how much of the Prado's premium comes back when you sell. A 2019 to 2021 Prado at 100,000 to 199,999 km asks QAR 108,000 (11 cars, 150,000 km), and a 2014 to 2016 Prado at 200,000 to 299,999 km asks QAR 69,000 (14 cars, 228,000 km), a fall of 36%. The Fortuner's equivalent has 9 cars at the top and one at the bottom, so there is no comparison to make.

What to do with this

  • If you are buying under about QAR 130,000 — Start with the Fortuner if age and distance matter most to you, because at any budget here it is younger and less driven. Take the Prado if you have driven both and prefer it, and treat the gap in the lists above as the price of that preference. Either way, have a good workshop check the car before you pay.
  • If you are buying a Prado from 2023 or 2024 — Decide which engine you want before you compare prices. The two years ask close to the same and hold different cars. Ask the seller to confirm the engine, since the field is blank on some listings.
  • If you are buying nearly new — A 2025 car with 18,000 km asks about an eighth less than the starting price of a new one. Check the trim and the remaining warranty before you count that as a saving.
  • If you are selling — Price against your own model, year and mileage. A Prado owner has no reason to discount towards Fortuner prices. A Fortuner owner should not expect Prado prices for a similar car.
  • If you are holding — Nothing here says to sell. These are opening prices on a small number of cars, and one day's snapshot cannot show either model's price moving.

What we do not know, and what would change the answer. These are asking prices, not sale prices, and either model may sell further below its asking price than the other. Our like-for-like comparison rests on five groups and a small number of cars, so the 31% is a rough figure. Most listings do not state a trim, so a difference in equipment could explain part of any gap. The cylinder field is blank on many cars. Listings came from more than one feed and two of those feeds have no listing newer than 11 August 2026, so some of those cars may already have sold. The under-1,000 km figures were not de-duplicated. Toyota Qatar's prices are today's starting prices and not what the listed cars cost when new. We did not compare running costs, reliability, space or off-road ability, and any of those could matter more to you than the price.
