QAR 100,000 buys a 2020 Patrol with 116,000 km in Qatar, or a 2016 Land Cruiser with 279,000 km

On 2014 to 2021 cars of the same year and mileage, a used Land Cruiser asks about 75% more than a Patrol. On 2025 and 2026 cars the gap is gone. Most of the Land Cruiser's extra price appears to come back when you sell, but the money is tied up in the meantime, and the Patrol buys a much younger car.

Patrol or Land Cruiser is an old argument in Gulf motoring, and it is usually settled on loyalty. Here it is on what sellers are asking for both cars today.

BuMotar had 1,623 Land Cruisers and 566 Patrols among its 13,664 live listings on 6 November 2026. We kept used cars from model years 2014 to 2026, with 1,000 to 600,000 km and an asking price of at least QAR 15,000. We took out duplicates and manual gearboxes, and the cars sold under these names that are really something else: Prado and 70 Series on the Toyota side, Safari and Super Safari on the Nissan side. That leaves 954 Land Cruisers and 381 Patrols.

What the same money buys

Take a budget, allow about 10% either way, and look at the middle car of each model in that range. These are median model years and odometer readings:

  • QAR 45,000 to 55,000 — Patrol: 2015, 233,000 km (65 cars). Land Cruiser: 2015, 353,500 km, but only 4 cars.
  • QAR 90,000 to 110,000 — Patrol: 2020, 116,000 km (31 cars). Land Cruiser: 2016, 279,000 km (74 cars).
  • QAR 135,000 to 165,000 — Patrol: 2022, 75,000 km (47 cars). Land Cruiser: 2019, 178,000 km (161 cars).
  • QAR 180,000 to 220,000 — Patrol: 2024, 29,500 km (10 cars). Land Cruiser: 2022, 80,000 km (149 cars).

In the two middle bands the Patrol is three or four model years younger, with about 100,000 to 160,000 km less on it.

The same year, the same mileage

Part of that gap is odometer, so we matched the cars by model year and 50,000 km band, kept groups with at least two of each model, and compared median asking prices.

  • 2014 to 2021 — The Land Cruiser asks about 75% more, on average about QAR 51,000. 377 Land Cruisers and 260 Patrols in 33 groups.
  • 2022 to 2024 — The Land Cruiser asks about 55% more, about QAR 82,000. 252 Land Cruisers and 69 Patrols in 9 groups.
  • 2025 and 2026 — The Patrol asks about 5% more, about QAR 13,000. 114 Land Cruisers and 23 Patrols in 3 groups.

Engines do not explain the older gap. Where the listing records the cylinders, V8 against V8 in 2014 to 2021 still shows the Land Cruiser asking about 77% more (64 and 66 cars). V6 against V6, the gap is about 37%, on fewer cars (24 and 28).

Among 2014 to 2017 cars, a Land Cruiser at 300,000 to 350,000 km has a median asking price of QAR 84,500 (48 cars). A Patrol of the same years at 100,000 to 150,000 km asks QAR 71,250 (20 cars).

A 2014 to 2017 Land Cruiser past 300,000 km asks more than a Patrol of the same years with about a third of the distance on it.

On those same years the Patrol's median stops falling: QAR 49,000 in each of the 200,000, 250,000 and 300,000 km bands (47, 30 and 25 cars). The Land Cruiser keeps sliding: QAR 110,000, 89,000, 84,500.

Why the newest cars look level

Both cars changed generation, in different years. Toyota revealed the 300 Series in June 2021, dropping the V8 for V6s, and on our site twin-turbo trims start with model year 2022. Nissan revealed the Y63 Patrol in Abu Dhabi in September 2024, replacing the 5.6-litre V8 with a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 and, in some markets, a 3.8-litre V6.

So only the 2014 to 2021 row compares old with old. The 2022 to 2024 row sets a new Land Cruiser against an old Patrol, and part of that gap is generation. A 2024 Patrol asks QAR 170,000 at 31,000 km (23 cars); a 2025 asks QAR 285,000 at 20,000 km (17 cars). That is QAR 115,000 for one model year. The Land Cruiser's step from 2021 to 2022 is about QAR 45,000: QAR 165,000 at 145,000 km (91 cars) to QAR 210,000 at 110,000 km (94 cars).

We would not read the last row as the Patrol being dearer. It rests on 23 Patrols with a different mix of trims. Where sellers named one, a Land Cruiser VXR Twin Turbo asks QAR 335,000 (13 cars) and a GXR Twin Turbo QAR 269,000 (12), against QAR 288,000 for a Patrol described as Platinum (7). The 75% has not opened on this generation, and listings cannot yet say whether it will.

Do you get the premium back?

Mostly, on asking prices. Compare a 2019 to 2021 car at 100,000 to 199,999 km with a 2014 to 2016 car at 200,000 to 299,999 km, roughly what five more years and another 100,000 km do.

  • Land Cruiser — QAR 155,000 (99 cars, 149,000 km) down to QAR 89,000 (84 cars, 267,000 km). A fall of QAR 66,000, or 43%.
  • Patrol — QAR 106,000 (38 cars, 145,500 km) down to QAR 49,000 (66 cars, 239,800 km). A fall of QAR 57,000, or 54%.

The Land Cruiser loses the smaller share and the Patrol fewer riyals. You pay QAR 49,000 more for the Land Cruiser and QAR 40,000 of that is still there five years on, so the premium costs about QAR 9,000 plus whatever the money could have done elsewhere. This is a snapshot of different cars, not one car followed for five years. The Patrol's engine mix also shifts: where cylinders are recorded, the 2019 to 2021 cars are 37 V6 and 5 V8, the 2014 to 2016 cars 4 V6 and 85 V8.

The odometer risk sits with the Toyota

Of the 2014 to 2021 cars, 58% of Land Cruisers (316 of 545) show 200,000 km or more, against 41% of Patrols (117 of 288). Past 300,000 km it is 22% against 10%. The median Land Cruiser has covered about 26,500 km per year of age, the median Patrol about 19,400, counting age as 2026 minus the model year.

What to do with this

  • If you are buying on a budget under about QAR 150,000 — Look at the Patrol first: it buys a younger car with far less distance on it. If you want the Land Cruiser anyway, the price of that preference is written above. Either way, have a good workshop check the gearbox and suspension before you pay.
  • If you are buying nearly new — Compare actual trims, since the two ask about the same at this age. A 2024 Patrol is an older design and about QAR 115,000 cheaper than a 2025; decide whether that suits you. These are opening prices, so negotiate.
  • If you are selling — Price against your own model; Land Cruiser prices are a different market. On a 2014 to 2017 Patrol past 200,000 km, the median sits at QAR 49,000, so a clean car with records is your argument for asking more.
  • If you are holding — Nothing here says to swap. If you own a 2021 to 2024 Patrol, we cannot yet say what the new generation is doing to its price, because we have no price history. An older Land Cruiser still asks well above a Patrol of its age at any distance we measured.

What we do not know, and what would change the answer. These are asking prices, not sale prices. If Land Cruisers sell closer to what they ask, the true gap is wider than this; if further below it, narrower. We cannot measure how long either car takes to sell, because our listing dates partly reflect when a car reached our site. We have no data on reliability, accident history or repair bills, and fuel and parts are not included; any of these could outweigh the QAR 9,000. Mileage, trim and cylinders are as sellers wrote them, many listings give no cylinders, and a few Safari, Prado or 70 Series cars may remain. Some matched groups hold only two or three of a model. We used model year to mark the generation change, and a car at the boundary could fall on the wrong side.
